Grape seed
extract is known for its powerful antioxidant properties. Antioxidants
help protect the body from free radicals. Free radicals play
a significant role in the development of degenerative diseases
and aging. Free radicals are substances in the body that cause
oxidation, the same process that causes iron to rust. The antioxidant
properties of grape seed extract are derived from bioflavinoids
identified as proanthocyanidins (oligomeric proanthocyanidins
or OPC's). Scientific studies, including those done at Creighton
University, reveal that proanthocyanidin antioxidant activity
is up to 20 times more powerful than vitamin C and 50 times
more effective than vitamin E. More extensive research suggests
that grape seed extract may be beneficial in many areas
of health due to the powerful antioxidant properties.
Proanthocyanidins have the ability
to bind to collagen thereby promoting youthful skin, healthy
cells, and cellular elasticity and flexibility. Other studies
reveal protection from the damaging effects of the sun and improved
vision, arteries, body tissues such as the heart and joint flexibility.
Common results also include improvement in blood circulation
through strengthening capillaries, arteries and veins.
The development of vision impairment
is common with increasing age. However, a recent clinical study
involved 100 individuals who were free of eye defect and eye
disease. These individuals were given 200 milligrams(mg) of
proanthocyanidins daily for four weeks. The subjects were then
testing for blinding and eyesight in dim light. 98 out of the
100 tested exhibited an improvement in vision as a result of
supplementation with proanthocyanidins.
Allergy, sinusitis and athsma
sufferers may be interested in knowing that OPC's found in grape
seed extract have the ability to inhibit histamine. Histamine
has long been know to play an important role in inflammation
that occurs in these conditions.
