Coenzyme
Q10 or ubiquinone is a fat-soluble vitamin-like substance
present in every cell of the body that serves as a coenzyme
for many key steps in the production of energy within the
cell. CoQ10 is considered to be a powerful antioxidant. It
is part of the Krebs cycle responsible for the production
of ATP or cellular energy. CoQ10 is synthesized from the amino
acid tyrosine in the body. It plays a crucial role as a cofactor
in at least three enzymes in the cell's mitochondria as well
as other cellular enzymes. CoQ10 is known to be highly concentrated
in heart muscle cells due to the high energy requirements.
For the past 14 years, the great bulk of clinical work with
CoQ10 has focused on heart disease. Specifically, congestive
heart failure has been strongly correlated with significantly
low blood and tissue levels of CoQ10. At this time there have
been at least nine controlled studies that indicate the effectiveness
and remarkable safety of CoQ10 in the treatment of heart disease.
The efficacy and safety of CoQ10 in the treatment of congestive
heart failure also appears to be well established. The largest
study to date is the Italian multicenter trial, by Baggio
et al., involving 2664 patients with heart failure.
Each capsule contains 50 mg
of Coenzyme Q10.
The suggested usage of this supplement is 1 to 3 capsules
per day.
